PRESS RELEASE

ECB Annual Photography Award 2007 “Greece Today“

29 October 2007

On Monday, 29 October 2007, as part of the Cultural Days of the European Central Bank – Greece 2007, the European Central Bank (ECB) will open the photography exhibition entitled “ ECB Annual Photography Award 2007: “Greece Today” and present its photography prize, the ECB Annual Photography Award, to Vagelis Georgas (1st prize), Myrto Papadopoulos (2nd prize) and Angeliki Svoronou (3rd prize).

Since 2004, the ECB has invited young photographers to present their own vision of the country in which they live. This annual photography competition always focuses on the showcase country of the Cultural Days. “Greece Today” was therefore the theme of the competition launched by the ECB in cooperation with the Bank of Greece in spring 2007. The competition was open to photographers of Greek nationality aged 35 or below.

The works submitted were assessed by a jury comprising internationally renowned experts, namely Costis Antoniadis, Professor of Photography in Athens, Xavier Canonne, Director of the Museum of Photography in Charleroi, Fani Constantinou, curator at the Benaki Museum, John Demos, Director of Apeiron Photos, Claudio Hils, communications designer and curator and Eva Hodek, Director of the House of Photography in Prague. The jury first drew up a list of ten finalists, from which it then chose three prizewinners for the ECB Annual Photography Award, with prizes worth €10,000 in total.

The photographs of the three prizewinners show “Greece Today” from a wide variety of perspectives. Vagelis Georgas won the first prize of the ECB Annual Photography Award 2007 with his powerful black and white images of street scenes in the lively Greek capital of Athens. The expressive photographs by Myrto Papadopoulos, winner of the second prize, portray the life of immigrants living in northern Greece. The third prize was awarded to Angeliki Svoronou whose unusual images of beaches evoke a rather sceptical view of Greece as a holiday paradise and of the importance of tourism.

In addition to the photographs of the three prizewinners, the exhibition will display the works of Angeliki Chryssanthakopoulou, Katerina Gaka, Giorgos Kordakis, George Psanis, Christos Sotiropoulos, Michalis Sourlis and Yiorgis Yerolympos.

A digital collection of contemporary photography is to be compiled, which will include the works submitted to the ECB Annual Photography Award over the years, and thus reflect the cultural wealth of Europe as seen by young artists.
