By providing a common infrastructure that the private sector can build on, the digital euro will be a catalyst for innovation
Europe is home to many innovative payment ideas. But turning them into solutions that can reach people and businesses across the euro area can be difficult.
The digital euro could change that. It would be innovative in itself: a new form of public money for the digital age, with pan-European reach, offline use, high levels of privacy and resilience all built in. At the same time, it could provide a common European foundation on which banks, payment service providers, fintech companies and merchants can develop new services and payment solutions.
In this way, the digital euro would both complement private payment solutions and support further innovation in the market.
The digital euro innovation platform is designed to foster collaboration with market participants in order to test ideas and explore how the digital euro could work in practice, identify opportunities for innovation, and generate ideas for new services and business opportunities.
Innovating with the market
The Eurosystem is working with market participants to explore how the digital euro could support new payment experiences, services and business opportunities. This collaboration takes place through the digital euro innovation platform, an initiative bringing together stakeholders from across the private and public sectors.
New innovation platform activities
Findings from the first wave of activities within the digital euro innovation platform showed how the market could build on the digital euro’s core features to develop practical services and user experiences.
The Eurosystem is now taking this work forward through a new wave of innovation platform activities, organised around two workstreams: experimentation and exploration. The activities will give market participants the opportunity to develop and test promising ideas and explore how emerging technologies could support new services and business opportunities in the future.

Building on previous collaboration
The new activities build on the findings of the initial pioneers and visionaries workstreams within the digital euro innovation platform launched in 2024. Around 70 market participants worked with the Eurosystem to test conditional payments and explore innovative ideas for the digital euro. They helped identify areas where the digital euro could support innovation to address the needs of consumers and businesses.
